Summary

In 1976, SIL was invited to cooperate with the Ministry of Education in southern Sudan in a mother-tongue literacy program that would be followed by transfer to Arabic and English. Evaluators were education professors from the University of Illinois. Evaluators recommended spending less time on mechanical drilling and more time on meaningful reading.

Includes a list of the strengths and weaknesses of the Gudschinsky method. Appendixes show specific methods of improvement in letter drills, functor drills, and working with context clues. Final appendix gives a model for a transitional primer.
