Summary

Is about the nature of the reading process and ways of teaching reading. Aim is "to provide teachers with a reasoned base from which to participate in the debate on reading, as it affects them directly in their planning and classroom practice" (page 1). Main methods of teaching reading are usually

  • alphabetic
  • phonic
  • whole word or look and say, and
  • sentence.

However, growing emphasis on the importance of individual differences has led to the discussion in the literature on method of two approaches--language-experience and individualized reading (page 169). Includes 23 authors that contributed to the following sections:

  • Looking at literacy
  • The reading process
  • From method to material
  • Looking at texts
  • Evaluating reading progress
  • Reading and responsibility
  • Where to next?
