Clevenger, Joycelyn. 1972. "The use of word drills in primers." Notes on Literacy. (Republished in NOLSA 1979.) Interest level: specialist.

First set of Engenni primers taught pupils to read fluently and with understanding, but did not teach them how to sound out new words.

Author revised primers using the five-step method of teaching syllables proposed by Sarah Gudschinsky:

• analysis
• synthesis
• comparison
• contrast, and
• random selection.

Added built words (new words made up of old syllables) and systematic drills to each lesson. Lists principles essential for setting up effective drills.
