Crofts 1976

Reference

Crofts, Marjorie. 1976. "Must tone always be written in a tonal language?" The Bible Translator. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

Discusses a problem in which Bible translators decided to write tone in certain constructions only. They exploited various features of discourse structure in dealing with potential ambiguities that remained. Indicates tone by using a hyphen in genitive and relational structures with question words only. Facilitates teaching reading and preparing manuscripts in translation, and decreases printing costs for literature for local readers.
