Examines barriers to adult participation in learning and presents means of enhancing participation in learning activities. Constructs two explanatory models for learner motivation and for organizing knowledge about learner characteristics and circumstances.

 

Chapters 6 and 9 summarize the book. Integrates research and theory into two frameworks for understanding adult learners. The Chain of Response (COR) model of Chapter 6, "Implications for increasing participation," explains who participates in adult learning activities and why. The Characteristics of Learners (CAL) model of Chapter 9, "Facilitating learning," provides a framework for thinking what and how adults learn.
