Summary

Annual teachers' conference was key factor in the effectiveness and rapid growth of bilingual education among the Aguaruna of the Peruvian jungle. Describes the

  • purpose
  • location
  • time
  • participants, and
  • content of meetings.

Served to

  • improve communication
  • resolve personal problems, and
  • enhance language group unity and identity.

In 1958, teachers began meeting annually to share their ideas and problems. As teachers tried to understand their common concerns, they found unity of purpose based on group choices. In the 1970s, the government decentralized school administration. Since 1981, teachers have asked to reestablish the conference to correct the confusion caused by districts following different policies and materials.

[According to February 10, 1994 information from Peru SIL, the Aguarunas are still hoping to have a centralized bilingual school system.]
