Reference

Mohanty, Ajit K. 1990. "Psychological consequences of mother tongue maintenance and multilingualism in India." In Pattanayak 1990. Interest level: academic.

Summary

Considers the question, "Is mother tongue maintenance by the mother tongue minorities a barrier to their social, educational, and economic mobility and to their integration with the larger social system, or is it a key to their equal opportunities in a multilingual social mosaic?"

Discusses studies on bilingualism among the Kond people in Orissa, India. "These studies, [with many kinds of testing] conducted with schooled and unschooled Kond children belonging to different age groups, from 6 to 16 years, show that the Kui-Oriya bilingual groups outperformed the Oriya-only monolinguals on a number of cognitive, linguistic, and metalinguistic ability measures and (in the case of schooled children) academic achievement."
