Sievert, John F. 1971. "Designing adult literacy programmes for educational effectiveness." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature. Interest level: general.
| Summary | |
Have you ever seen new readers who seem fluent when reading familiar material but are unable to read new material? Do they laboriously sound out words, syllable by syllable or even letter by letter? Maybe you noticed the look of despair on the faces of new readers when they turn a page and find one massive blob of print. It may have no illustrations and no adequate spacing between lines.
Each situation grows out of a separate cause, but all have one thing in common. Persons who designed the initial literacy program neglected valid and important educational principles in the program. Because of this, the program will not enable people to become fluent, habitual, functional readers who can improve their lives through the printed page.
