Summary

Belief in the cargo cult, with rewards for the performance of ritualistic ceremonies sought in material possessions, is an extension of the belief system of the Waffa people.

Lawrence (1959) stated the following regarding the belief system of the people in the Madang Province: "In traditional terms, the practical application of knowledge involves two things: the performance of the physical undertaking itself; and the performance of elaborate ritual to ensure that deities play their part and see that the outcome is prosperous. Such ritual has to be performed before carrying out any important secular activity that involves risk or the possibility of failure."
